Studies have shown that place value understanding has a positive correlation with overall mathematics achievement. It also supports a growth in relationship knowledge such that reliance on
memory and algorithms are less essential.
In this session, develop an awareness of how the authentic understanding of place value enables students to construct meaning for themselves through applicable, hands-on activities. Consider how to exploit students’ natural curiosity and provoke them to ask good mathematical questions generating interesting insights and discussions through numerical relational understanding.
Secondary Hub colleagues only.
